Possible tappet noise

I bought this 3 year old Mk7 1.4l TSI Blue Motion with 15,000 miles on the clock. I don't know what's normal but the engine sound s very "tappety" to me.

Sounds quite loud. Hard to say why exactly . I do know the inlet camshaft pulley fails on these engines and then the engine is ruined. I would get it checked out.

I changed the oil with the fully synthetic VW recommended 504.00 Oil a few months ago at 12,000 miles. I also changed the oil filter. Because I could only replace the filter after removing the plastic (under engine) road shield anyway, I also drained the oil by removing the drain plug, instead of using a PETA or pump oil extraction system

Anway, yesterday I took the Golf to a local independent mechanic, who I've trusted for many years. He suggests the noise is probably a soon-to-fail pulley on one of the units driven by the serpentne / fan belt. Specifically he suspects the alternator. He said "these VW engines are known for failing alternator pulleys" - oh really - I never heard that.

He said he removed the belt and spun the altrenator pulley by hand. This often shows the fault up, he said. But it didn't in my case. He didn't charge me anything.

I'm dubious because I think the engine nosie sounds more like a diesel than a 1.4 petrol.

Could a failing pulley noise be that bad, I wonder.
