The job sheet said "small service as per schedule, had major service last year. NOTE:- Car seems to be lacking power"

Well therein lies the rub, we serviced it last year and the technician doing the job remembers doing the filter and his writing was on the top. We date all filter housings (oil, air, fuel, even pollen if possible) with a fine tip yellow paint marker pen (we call it gimp paint, I have no idea why...) which can be quickly cleaned off next time with a little brake cleaner on a rag and redone with the new date. We do the same with the sump, writing on the date and the type of oil used and on the cam belt cover with the mileage; as the cars history builds up it saves time asking the office daft questions like what oil did we use and when did we do the cam belt?

Years ago a good customer brought in his not very old early bumper Jetta 16v (God I’m getting old!) and he said every time he booted it there was no power. I test drove it and he was right, it just bogged down and made a bellowing noise. I opened up the air filter and found not just a mouse’s nest but what must have been his entire winter larder for him and his extended family! I had visions of said poor mouse being sucked up against the air filter like some cartoon sketch or how bereft he must have been to see his home and food drive off into the distance…

I left my old Renault Trafic parked outside our shop for a few days, as the battery needed replacing.
When I eventually opened the bonnet to fit the battery I found a cat had produced a litter of kittens in there.
I couldn't just chuck them out in the street, so we left the van there until she moved on.

Before becoming more specialised, my company used to take on general boat maintenace, including some engine servicing.

One day my wife took a phone call from an owner complaining about our work. When she asked the name of the boat he said "er .... High - er .... , .... High something, hang on, I'll go and look" and presumably went to peer over the side before he told her.

It was a Princess motor yacht of 50 some feet, on which we had only changed the oil and filters. The owner was complaining that both his engines were "ruined", so I went myself to look at it.

On arriving, he told me "The right hand engine is only doing 15 miles an hour, and the left one is only doing 20".

The boat had tachometers for each engine, so I guessed he was probably looking at the rpm.

In the engine room I found the prop shafts could not be turned by hand, so called on a diver to check underneath.

Inevitably he found a nylon mooring line wrapped around both propellors, which he followed down into the gloom below, where it was attached to a concrete block of a couple of tons, which the boat had been dragging around the bay all afternoon.
