I had a similar expreience with my former car. Not the same, but almost the same. So I went to an Audi service, and they told, it's a know problem, and the gearbox SW needs to be changed. They did it, and the problem disappeared. However, an almost the same problem happened about 15-20k later and then they told, they have to replace the gearbox oil from the former one to a far more expensive one. They did it, and after this the problem disappeared again.

Maybe you can, or you have to do both in the same time, however the SW change can be done independently, but if you replace the oil to the new kind of oil, than the SW change is mandatory.

I'm not sure, if it's your case, but the 3rd gear sounds very similar to me.

Lots of Land Rover people recommend bristol trans for the Disco3/4 ZF boxes, in fact Ive never read a bad thing about them.

If you upgrade the software I believe that you need to use different (more expensive) fluid.

Also when they've dropped the pan there is an internal bolt tightening sequence that should be undertaken.

I've used Bristol Transmissions and they are good, but won't be able to do either the software upgrade, the tightening sequence or a flush through, so you will be left with 30% of old fluid in your tranny. If using them then ensure you get there early and have the first appointment of the day. Appreciate that that the tranny can't be hot, so arrive an hour before they open to give it a chance to cool.

In contrary. If you change the more expensive oil, than it's a mandatory rule to change the software. However you can change the software without the oil change. I did it, so I'm quite sure about this. The oil change is the solution, if there will be transmission problems in the gear 3-4 change, or some 3rd gear problems, but the OP's problem doesn't seems so huge at the moment.

Thank you for replies. I have been living with the "thunk" in the meanwhile.
I got around to visiting my local Audi dealer last weekend, to ask for an oil change quote.
After much head scratching by half a dozen "assistants" I was told that my car has a sealed for life box and the oil cannot be changed?
    Does that sound correct?

The first part sounds good, yes, it's a "life-long" type oil, so you don't have an Audi required, mandatory gearbox oil change period. However this means: If there is no failure, do not change the oil. By this, the other part of the message is strictly incorrect, as there a lot of owners, who changes the gearbox oil periodically, according to the ZF's advice.

So, the oil can not be changed statement is definetly wrong.
