Please can anyone tell me if they have had this happen to them?
Yesterday I noticed, when changing from 3 to 2, a thump or thud which I perceive as audible but really it is felt more than heard. It does not occur on any other change.

I get a thud sometimes going from 2nd to 1st. Most people sAy you change gearbox oil. I take you have a quattro tiptronic?

As above need to know if it's manual or tiptronic. If it's tiptronic, then it most likely need a gearbox service, oil/filter etc best to find a ZF specialist.

Been quoted £90 diagnostic, then £305 for a service - with talk of replacement sump pan and stuff?

Does anyone know where the nearest reputable service centre to Hereford would be?

That's about right for an oil change.

There is also a bolt tightening sequence for our transmissions once the pan is off.

Whilst I am further south of you on the M5 this is the only place I'd take mine to have the transmission serviced as they are one of the 2 x ZF centers in the UK:

Auto RepairÂ*Tollcross,Â*GlasgowÂ*|Â*Mackie Automatic & Manual Transmissions

Unlike most they actually suck out all/flush through the tranny and TC, so you'll have completely new fluid, with just a drain and refill you'll have circa 30% of old fluid still in there

Am a little unsure why diagnostics is needed, unless it's a dedicated one for transmissions?

PS: ZF recommends a fluid filter change at 80k miles and then 50k thereafter, so you're already 2 behind if it's not been done previously.

You could try Bristol Transmissions. I have never used them though.
