I've had my 2010 A3 1.6 diesel from new, now with 63000 miles on the clock. It suddenly lost power the other day & would not pull & it just spluttered to a halt with smoke coming from the exhaust. I had to be recovered to my independent garage which I use for servicing. There were no warning lights on the dash, just a total loss of power. Engine starts & runs ok at idle but wouldn't pull away. No smoke from exhaust on starting engine several times. On investigation garage were surprised that no fault codes are showing on the diagnostics but symptoms are what happens when EGR valve fails. As a new EGR & fitting is going to cost me a lot of money, does anyone know if this really is the problem?

Having recently had a new one fitted (61 reg, 2 litre TDI), this does not seem the same. Mine went into limp mode and the "coil" light (engine management) came on, resetting after switching on and off again. This happened over a long period and gradually got worse (happening more often) before getting it fixed.

I don't know about the 1.6 litre, but the age would suggest that the EGR is still at the front of the engine rather than having been shoved below the turbo with a combined cooler (6h work + £400 part......). The 2010 version would have been about 1h + £80.

I'm not an engineer, but it seems a more severe problem, sadly.

Apparently the EGR valve is buried at the back of the engine somewhere. It is a sod to remove. It was the EGR valve that was the problem. Having seen the old one come off, it was full of black carbon stuff! As for there being no warning lights, the only explanation seems to be that it was an instantaneous failure & the engine management system didn't recognise it??? Anyway, its all good now.
Got to take it into an Audi dealer now to rectify the cheat device.
