    Hi guys,
I've got a 2004 diesel (1.9TDi) which has been having intermittent engine stutter / loss of power for about 3 months. I am honestly lost at this point so if anyone has any advice I'd be glad to hear it. Sorry in advance for the brain dump but here is everything I've kept track of.

    Symptoms
The problem always crops up after 10-15 minutes of driving, at which point:
    • Engine power falls off
    • Trying to accelerate causes the engine to stutter and the gear stick to vibrate
    • ESP light (and sometimes also ABS light) comes on

Interestingly my dash shows about the MPG I'd expect for the speed / gear while its happening
When I pull over and turn off the engine for two seconds the stuttering goes away for the remainder of my journey (I've done anywhere from 20 to 200 miles this way)
If I cycle power to the engine while the car is in motion, the problem doesn't go away

I can't tell if I'm getting paranoid but it seems to be getting worse
    • It starts stuttering earlier
    • It happens *every* time now
    • Some minor stutter when pulling away in first gear
    • Poor engine power at low revs (e.g. doing <25mph in 3rd gear feels sluggish but 30+ is fine)

    Recent services
I had a routine front brakes pad + disc replacement about 6 weeks ago
    • Front passenger side scissor was rusty and got replaced

I had a full service 2 weeks ago
    • MAF sensor was throwing errors, no other codes
    • A couple of seals were replaced
    • Oil was changed
    • I requested that the ABS sensors be checked
    • I have replaced the MAF sensor

    Other stuff I've checked
There don't appear to be any loose cables / hoses under the bonnet
I had the air filter open when I replaced the MAF sensor and there were no blockages
I thought it was related to the cold weather but it ain't getting better!
I have a slow (weeks between refills) puncture on the front passenger side but there is no obvious damage on either tyre wall

    Yesterday
It happened in the morning on my way to work:
    • I felt the first tremor after about 10 minutes
    • I had been in 4th gear for about a minute (does this rule out clutch+gearbox?)
    • I hadn't got the car over 40mph that morning
    • Forced the car to drive at 50-60mph until I got to a layby
      • Check engine light came on while driving
      • I got this warning message: "Emissions Workshop!"
      • Check engine light was still lit after restarting the engine

It happened again in the evening - and for the first time ever, the stutter stuck around after I restarted the engine but it went away on its own pretty quickly.

    Help!
Has anyone had this problem before? I want to say the problem is electrical but the fact that it only happens once per journey is just baffling!

Congrats for making it to the bottom of this wall of text and thanks for reading =)
    Dan

i would start with a code read first but it could be that you need a new injector harness. 65 quid from a dealer and an hour to fit..

    Thanks Zollaf!

Can problems with the injector harness give out ESP/ABS warnings?

I'll check the codes again asap anyway. Do you know if the cables you can get online are worth bothering with? I've seen a few for as little as £5 and I'm pretty skeptical...
