Does the "Load index" matter?

Obviously it does matter, but to what extent?

basically, I need a new set of rubber and found Michelin Pilot Super Sport with a load index of 95 for £159.53 each. However to go to 99 they rocket to £242.28.

So the recommended index is 99 which has a load rating of 775Kgs but the 95 index is 690. Quite a big difference - does this matter?

Are the 95 also XL rated? What sizes are you looking at. One thing I wouldn't do is change away from the manufacturers load rating. I have 265/35/20 on mine and they are quite expensive. Looking at 275/35/20 for my next set are a whole lot cheaper and will result in a comfier ride and help fill the arches better.

Cheers mate, Yeah thats the size I'm after. The 95 load index arent XL, the 99s are and again they are the manufacturers recommended size so will probably have to stick with that. Just pricey - but then again so is the car!

As for your next size, the 265 bit is how fat they are, the 35 bit is how much rubber you can see once on the alloy and its increasing that which would give you a comfier ride and fill the arches more. With 275 you may find they are too wide to fit on the alloys.

You will easily fit 275/35, I've seen it as a popular option on a few of the US forums. Its only an extra 5mm either side. If you check one of the tyre size calculators online it will show that they are compatible on the stock 20" rim.

As far as I know the XL refers to reinforced as the need to be to handle the heat load at high speeds the a7 can hit due to its weight etc

My tyres are not due for another year I'd say but I'll jump to the 275/35. Just my two cents.

Ok thanks will have a look. Having a look around though it seems anything but what audi recommend could invalidate my insurance.

Anything with OE ("Audi approved") stamp should suffice I would imagine. Probably best to stick to the standard sizing so
