Well I've never swapped a whole engine over, at least this one is small. Any idea where I might find one ?

Been looking on eBay. Seems like a gamble but there's no choice really.

Try a vw breaker. Think you have less of a gamble from them than Ebay.

Those engines were used in the Ibiza and Fabia as well, so might broaden your chances of finding the engine to use in a swap, check engine codes though. Try to do a compression test on a donor engine before buying, (hot wire to the starter motor) as they are prone to burning out exhaust valves and possible reason why the car is in the breakers in the first place.
Looks like your lad is going to get some real spanner time on his first car!!

Just a few more things before you plan on an engine change - have you done a compression test on the engine and have you swapped round the ignition coil packs to confirm it is not the #3 coil pack knackered. The new plug might have worked for a while with the knackered coil pack. running on 2 cylinders may have lead to the non firing 3rd piston and rings passing excess oil as the rings and piston run colder and unpressurised ( maybe not as well !!) If you are condemning this engine is it not worth whipping the head off and checking bores for scoring etc to confirm, or even dropping the sump and knocking #3 piston out to check the rings, it would give your lad a good run for his money if nowt else!
If you have lost that much oil in 70 miles and are belching out black smoke then chances are the exhaust cat is fouled up, no MIL on, check the O2 probe has not been tampered with to keep the light off. you might want to replace the cat and check the rest of the exhaust while you've got the thing in bits.
best wishes and good luck with it.

so you bought it from a garage and now he is saying it was a private sale. i would remind him of the consumer goods act, the bit about where even a private sale can go wrong, tell trading standards, then take him to court to get a refund if he still doesnt comply. how is he saying its private, did you get a receipt ???

Your in a position you shouldn't be in. Small claims court is where I would be going with this. The garage should at least offer to take the car back and rectify this issue.

some good points above ! I've come across some garages that sell cars acting as a brokerage, saying it's a private sale but taking a 'commission' when sold for giving it selling space etc. Seen it a lot with boats and outboard motors.

I am going for the oil rings for the piston rings, my boys polo was the same, stuck into the piston instead of springing out onto the cylinder

Once the piston rings are done with the head, the engine should be good

Head is around £110 for valve check & valve stems from an engineering workshop, the engine had to come out on mine for the rings. Then new clutch as old one done

Normal problems with the polo can be

    * low & high oil pressure switches can go faulty
    * misfiring caused by spark plug , replace every 18,000 miles
    * misfiring caused by coils , replace every 18,000 miles
    * EGR valve stuck open
    * valves burnt out, usually number 3 cylinder

Don't know how much a VW / Skoda genuine head with valves costs, but you used to get a 2 year guarantee with them; whoever fitted them
    VW POLO 2002 1.2 12v , Audi A6 2006 2.0 TDi SE , Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDi

All 3 cars in the current fleet
