Hi all, my sons golf has started making a noise on start up now and again that leads me to believe the timing chain tensioner needs replacing. Do i just need to replace the tensioner or should i purchase a new timing chain kit and change the lot. Also some kits quote with a vvt sprocket, does this engine have one and is it worth changing. Also what other parts need to be replaced when carrying out this job, the golf is a 2010 1.4tsi 122bhp with fvsh 65k miles any help gratefully received. many thanks steve

    Hi
Never done a chain on this particular engine ( last chain I did was a Gardner 6LXB) and don't know if it has a VVT sprocket ( you'd need your engine code to confirm), but IMO you'd be mad not to change the full kit while you're in there, I've also read that it is recommended to change the pressed steel timing casing cover and shaft seal, as the cover can be distorted during removal then leak on refitting. looking at this workshop manual there are quite a lot of tools needed and even though not driven by the chain I'd consider changing the water pump at that mileage, You'd normally change a belt driven pump and while you're elbow deep in the engine might save you doing it anyway in another 10 or 20 k.
TBH I think I'd pay a man with the proper tools and experience to do this one !!
