Hi there this is a common fault with the A4 soft top I have one and it happened to me. There is a full description of how to do a temporary fix on this forum from a chap called vagpro . The problem is with the motor for the soft top pump the brushes are poor quality and start to stick crack . There is also adverts from vagpro and someone called autoelectron on ebay where they do a service on the motor. vagpro is in Leicester and autoelectron in Harrogate if either near to you. I did the temp fix took about 40 minutes and working so far but in harropgate in May so getting brushes upgraded then. Hope this helps

    Definitely a common problem.

My roof failed just before I took delivery of the car (from an Audi dealer) at 4 years old, due to the motor/pump. They repaired it of course, as I hadn't even got the car yet - cost them about £1000 !!

But then the replacement failed about 2 years later, and while I have done the 'bodge' repair myself a few times it really need replacement brushes.

Shame on Audi for such poor quality components costing mere pennies, but leading to such expensive repairs.

    Hi John,

I have the same issue every spring (after I have not used the roof for the winter) and I have to do the same fix every year. This year I decided to make a video of how to fix it incase anyone else has the same issue. I've just uploaded it to YouTube.

Audi A4 Cabriolet - fix for roof not opening - YouTube

It's a pretty easy fix, takes about 20-30 mins (a little longer if you have to video all the steps!). The issue (on my car) is that the little spring-loaded pin inside the electric motor that connects to the rotor in the motor gets stuck on my car. It's the motor that drives the hydraulics for the roof, the one that makes a whine when the roof is opening. In my car, the roof opens a crack but the whine of the motor never kicks in. The video shows the symptoms in my car, and then at the end of the video shows the roof working again. Hope that's some use to you, although it's a while since you posted!
