Hi all, I drive an audi 1.9tdi avant.
I have noticed that when my turbo kicks in I leave behind me a cloud of black smoke. When the turbo doesn't kick in there is no smoke. Does this mean that the vanes in the turbo are sticking?
    Cheers.

Do you have any associated power loss, as sticking vanes will put you into reduced power 'limp mode'.

A little black smoke is normal when you put your foot down, especially if the car has been remapped or is running a tuning box.

TDI's also tend to burn a little engine oil that gets blown along the boost hoses.

Excessive black smoke could indicate a problem (normally a high pressure boost leak).

    Thanks ini,
There is no power when the turbo doesn't kick in, when it does kick in there's more power but not a kick in the back feeling. The smoke could be grey it's hard to tell from the rear view mirror.

Change the air filter and see if its clearing. If not and the car its running on original nozzles, you might wanna replace them as well ! They wear out in high milleage motors and the spray pattern will be less than ideal, then the fuel won't ignite- hence the black smoke !
