Turn the heating controls up to 30c when you get in the car - if you listen carefully you will hear a relay click (suppl heater cuts in if set to auto). Once the car has warmed up return to comfortable settings.

Madness that you have to do this!

Update on my heating setting quandry: Took various advices and set the recirculation to off. And bumped the footwell temp up to its warmest.

I thought this had done the trick... as warm air started to come thro in the first 10 mins or so.. But to be honest I think this improvement in performance coincided with the outside av temp/weather getting a bit warmer; outside temp had risen to just below 10 degrees C.

Its turned colder now (average of c4 degrees C) and back to the usual of taking 40-60 mins for any real heat to come thro the heating system. Ho-hum...

So I'm thinking that the 2.0 tdi lump under cold conditions takes quite a long time to warm up fully and start giving heat back into the car interior?? How do the other 2.0tdi owners find this etc?

Daft laddie question; is the supplementary heater an electrical element type of heater? If it is I would have expected to feel its affects sooner than I am...

I've not had any issues with the car heating up. I think my circulation is set to Auto, and I have the footwell one step higher than default. The car heats up as expected and warm air is produced within minutes of starting up. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Thanks for the info Paddy. Is it a newer 2.0tdi 190bhp engine you run?

My car is the 2013 170 horse version. Not that that should make any difference.

I think it is electrical, and therefore it's slower.

Please imagine, how much air exists in the cabin, and try to figure out, how much time is needed to warm it up with some 1-2000W system, ie. with a hair dryer. Of course, it will take time. I think, this time is not really depending on the engine size, as all the diesel engines working in the same way, these engines creates far less heat then the petrol engines, this is one of the advantages of the diesel engines over the petrol engines.

2.0 L Ultra here. Warms up within a few minutes here. Regularly use the heater to defrost the windscreen and clear within around 5 minutes. Sounds like it's coming to temp faster than yours.

On the supplementary heater; I realise that it only might be a small element etc... but I would expect to feel some slight warmth coming thro on the side vents and footwell vent straight from the off etc; which I'm not... so thinking there is potentially an issue...

Also mindful that these modern Diesel engines are very efficient/produce little heat etc...

Thanks for all the info guys... this is a great forum...

    Hi,

I'm reading this thread with interest, does anyone have any issues with the car steaming/misting up on cold mornings when you have the air recirculation/recycling on.

On cold mornings I have a choice between being able to see out the windows or inhaling diesel fumes from old clapped out white vans, I've never had this on a car before.

My three-months old A6 2.0 TDI Ultra takes at most 10 minutes to be fully warm in the coldest conditions this winter, which were a few degrees sub-zero a couple of mornings. The misting has not been an issue anymore for me since I bought the Pingi Car Dehumidifier, which seems to work wonders. I have not used the de-misting option once since I bought it a month ago.
