I've got the V750 cert of entitlement and the plates are made up. I want to retain the currently assigned plate to put back on if I ever sell. My question is, do I assign the new plate first, then complete the retention process, or retain the old first then assign the new? Or does it matter? I can't find anywhere that says you can do both at the same time.

    Cheers!

Don't bother putting the current plate on retention.
I have recently taken cherished numbers off of 2 cars and the DVLA assigned the old regarding numbers back onto the cars.
    HAHA.

So the DVLA will assign a plate regardless? I honestly don't care what reg it gets if I sell, I just thought I'd need to buy one to replace the private one I'm taking off.

The private 1 your taking off will go on retention, there is a fee.
You then assign your new plate to the car.

I thought I would need to retain the age plate so if/when I sell the car in the future I can put it back on when I take the private plate off. This way I pay £80 rather than the cost of buying a new age plate. Is that how it works, or will the DVLA just assign a plate without charging?

You do not need to retain the age plate. You can do all the paperwork on line.

I have moved my private plate a few times now when I purchase a new car ..

As my cars are all new the dealer has first registered my new car with my private plate so the car has never actually been registered, but when changing, and to save time I always take the private plate off a few weeks before my new car arrives to save time, each time I have applied to remove the plate and put it on retention, and the DVLA send you notification to remove the plate, and put A123ABC registration etc on the car in place of the private reg, I then just give the dealer the certificate to register my new one..
