    Evening All,

I am the owner of a 1990 Mk2 Golf GL and have done for 9 years. Running the original 1.8 carb lump and even persevering with the Pierburg 2E2 for all this time. I've been on this forum for the duration of ownership, and prior whilst we had our previous mk2.
However, 2 years ago the head gasket failed and the head was completely reconditioned in the process. 6 months ago blue smoke started appearing from the exhaust and performance (all 90bhp ) has been dropping off steadily.

The wife and I decided that as the bodywork is in very good nick and my mechanic assures me the car is very solid, it's time to throw in the towel with this engine and go down the conversion route.

After deliberating for about 3 minutes, we decided on a VR6. After another minute of discussion it was finalised to head down the R32 route.

Finding one, was a different matter, it seems!

Here's the car ready for transplant.

After much searching I managed to get my hands on a 61k Mk1 Audi TT V6 that had had a front end whack (barely), but was a CAT D write off as a result.
After having it delivered, the strip down began.

Some more of the strip down and assortment of parts!

    Inlet removed for paint.

    Golf engine bay

    A bit less inside

    TT looking even more bare

    Bird's nest!

    Trackslag mid section

    DSG box removed

    Unique interior in the TT!

The most exciting bit in my eyes, Quaife LSD!

Can never have too many spare bits!

Until you get a puncture on the M25... meaning it all has to come out to access the spare!

thats a lotta power to put through those poor front wheels, what you need is a mk2 4 wheel drive gearbox and back axle and some welding

It is a lot of power yes, probably be pushing 270bhp having had the ecu mapped to run at optimum with the 2.5" de-cat exhaust system.
However, I have been very reliably informed by those in the know that the LSD will transform the way the car drives under hard acceleration and cornering.
The TT was quattro, but to fit that - or Syncro for that matter is a hell of an undertaking on a car without the transmission tunnel already in place. So are making the best of what's on the market by running the Quaife LSD and front and rear ARBs is what we're doing.

Blimey I bet that's a monster! Yeah the Quaife should help a lot, but not too intrusive.
We are running mk4 V5 gearbox, so shorter ratios in comparison to the VR6.

Oooh bit of a Frankenstein !

Shame it's not originally a GTI as the greater £ value would be there .

The fwd issue and great nose weight up front are huge dynamic issues to overcome..

We actually have a GTI 16v as well, but if that engine failed we would get the original engine replaced like for like or repaired if possible to retain originality. As this is a GL and worth £1000 tops, it means the value won't be negatively affected by carrying out this conversion.

The nose weight is actually a misconception. If the suspension is setup correctly, using Mk3 components (we already have Mk3 VR6 top mounts) then these things will alleviate this issue. But by misconception, I mean that the engine is in fact only very slightly heavier than a 20vt once all the turbo, intercooler and associated pipework have been installed too. The R32 is made of lighter materials than the older VR6s too, so should help.

Either way, Frankenstein's Monster will awake in a couple of weeks time...
