Hi all, I am VW's fan. 2007 passat B6 diesel 130k mileage. Every morning in winter, same driving route.
the outside temperature is 0 degree centigrade (32F).

I have to drive 2.2 miles and 10min and then the gauge start to move from the bottom.
Drive on motorway up to 12miles and 20min. The gauge reach the 90 degree centigrade (190F).During this time, if I turn on the heater fan in the car, the temp will drop to 80C. Until driving more 10min, the final temp reach 90C(190F)

I feel the coolant temp raise too slowly. If I compare with my golf 2010 MK6 diesel.
All of condition are same. But only after 1.5 miles and 5min, the gauge start to move from the bottom. and then 3.5miles and 7min driving on motorway, gauge can raise to 90 degree centigrade (190F).

do you think that thermostat of my passat B6 stuck at open status? OR golf and passat both are normal?

I recently checked the rate of temp rise and final temp of my 1.9 pd tdi B5.5 passat, the dash gauge came up to 90 relatively quick ( 5 miles ~10 minutes) but occasionally dipped below 90 if I sat in traffic of whacked the heater up. I ran a log with VCDS and found that although the dash showed 90'C the actual temp was only reaching mid 70'S. I changed the stat just after christmas, now it comes up to 90 on the dash a bit quicker and VCDS shows it settling out at around 92 to 94 actual engine temp. MPG has improved and car feels more lively.
The old stat was tested in a pan with thermometer, it was working ok, opening at the set temp 85'C IIRC, and closing ok as the water cooled back through low 80's. I can only think the original stat was getting sluggish at closing with old age, the new stat seems to respond quicker to the temp fluctuations keeping the engine hotter. I think the OP's B6 passat might benefit from a new stat same as mine did!

    Many thanks.
Amazing for me. although the gauge shows 90C but The VCDS only said it is 70C. that means there are at least two different temp sensors on the car? I also have the VCDS kits. I will try.
How much to replace a T-tate in your case? I found it is a complex procedure for B6 because the technician will remove the belt and water pump firstly. the labour cost may 3 hours. maybe 300+ pounds, T_T

Its costing £300 for the camshaft timing belt and water pump

    that is totally separate

here is a guide how to change thermostat, take the old one off and put the new one and old one in a pan of cold water. Boil the water up and see if the old one opens and closes at the same time as the new one. Also check the old thermostat closes fully as it maybe stuck open

I would also change the coolant temp switch at the same time, for all the cost Passat 2007 (B6) thermostat replacement - how to

The dash board temp indicator is very heavily damped, and does not give any real indication of temperature or the actual increase and decrease in temperature as the stat modulates open and closed to varying degrees. I changed my stat on the B5 passat after christmas while doing an oil and filter change. I think form memory the stat from TPS was about 20 quid + an O ring and bottle of G13. I swung the alternator over to get better access.
I did the test Neil describes on my old stat, it opened and closed ok but maybe too slowly to react to changes in engine temperature, whatever, the new stat has made it run hotter and more stable. As Neil says the stat change is completely different job from the timing belt / water pump change you mention.
