    Hi,

The coolant temp gauge on the dash has stopped working some time back. Any opinions as to whether this is a common failure? or what is most likely the problem.

The car is in tip top condition and 82K miles and uses no coolant, but obviously it would be nice to have it working.

    Thanks!

Common failure. You need a new CTS. A genuine one from VW or TPS would be best option, but there are cheaper ones available on eBay. Some proper G12/G13 coolant to top up once fitted would be a good idea as well

That was quick! Thanks very much. I usually get stuff from GSF, I presume they would do a quality replacement?

Oh, and where about is it located? I've never had to touch the engine bay yet..

    thanks again.

If memory serves correctly it's under the tandem pump on the rear of the head. Yeah I imagine GSF would be fine. Just make sure you get the old o ring out...

I should add that you PROBABLY need a new CTS. Nothing is certain in internet cyber diagnostics haha

Well you were right, job done. Thanks. Now looks like I need new Tstat as it never get above about 65C in this weather...I may create another post to ask if that can be done without removing alternator, as the Haynes seems to imply...

It can be done with the alternator in place but it is a fiddle. You will likely break the thermostat housing pulling the old one out whilst the sticktion is overcome. Best to have a new one redy, about £10 from VW or TPS.

Thanks for the speedy reply Col, yes I will get a new housing, best to go into these jobs well prepared.. Like your tidy motor, nice to see them looked after well.

Interstingly before MiniMental pointed me in the right direction the lad at GSF pointed at the fan sensor near the bottom rad hose and told me that was the CTS, I wonder how many have been changed there with no improvement to the temp gauge....

I did my thermostat just after chrtistmas, I took the top alternator bolt out, loosened the lower one and swung the alternator over out of the way, improved access quite a bit. As Col says, there will likely be a bit stiction when getting the housing to break away.
That's why the GSF lad is on the parts counter and not on the tools!

Don't get a GSF one, I did this but it was about 3 degrees low which meant I was always slightly over fuelling. Changed to a genuine one from TPS/VW when I needed to change the alternator and temp now gets to 89-90 according to VCDS. Made about 3-4mpg difference
