    Hi all,

I've owned my A6 C6 Avant (2.0TDI) for a good 8 months or so now, all of which have been relatively trouble free- it's a lovely drive.
It's recently had a big service and a remap with a family garage in the past couple of months. Everything was supposedly serviced, although I've had an issue come up in the past couple of weeks with the power steering.

About a week ago when I did a full left/right lock with the steering wheel I got a God-awful screeching sound - I was told this noise was normal in older, higher mileage cars by a friend of mine, although to listen and see how it progressed over time. I checked the central hydraulic fluid, found that it was a bit low (though this should have been checked the service?) and so topped it up with the recommended stuff, well Halfords' equivalent as that is all I had near me at the time. This made the sound worse. Now, when I am dry steering/moving the steering wheel at very low speeds I notice that this screeching sound is more prominent. The steering wheel shudders slightly too. This does not happen at anything over 15mph- and is completely unnoticeable when driving, only when performing manoeuvres. I have checked the PSA reservoir after a drive and I can't find any evidence of bubbles at the top of the fluid. There is also a generally louder ambient noise coming from the pump when the engine is idling.

I have gathered that it boils down to three things: the PSA system needed a complete bleed and re-fill with the correct Audi-recommended CHF, a pump replacement, or a steering rack replacement. Again, surely any cracks/damage to these components would have come up in the last service and not just in the past month, after the service? It also seems unlikely that a remap would place any additional stress on these components that would have led to this?

I have booked the car in for a service at another local recommended garage in the next week- I am just wondering if anybody else has had these issues and what to expect/prepare myself for in terms of the cost to rectify it? Additionally, is driving the car within the next week going to cause further damage to these components?

    Thanks!

I would say aux belt or tensioner fault I would be surprised if it needs any of the three things you list two of which are bound to be bloody expensive.
Regards the service if the level was between the marks technically its okay, but to be spot on its need to be near the max.

Quick look on ebay and assuming Im looking at the correct parts you are circa 40 quid for a tensioner and 15 quid for a belt, plus any other pulleys that may be worn.

I know it is very important that the proper recommended vag fluid is used,so this would be first check.
As already stated, the tensioner needs to be checked, and possibly the alternator clutch which can seize.
