Yet another poor MPG thread...

Hello

Audi 1.9 AWX Engine 130 C5 final edition estate

Averaging 30=33 mpg (about 8 months). I have had enough!

Has had generic remap to 165bhp. MPG has been OK after remap so don't think it is related.
I have done a fair amount of reading and testing and need more opinions please

Performance is good. I initialy thought MAF replace but perfomance is good and I tested MAF values and they seemed reasonable.
Replaced coolant temperature sensor
Replaced Thermostat
Replaced Disks and Pads all round checked greased calipers -not sticking
Tyre pressures good

Vag com checks

MAF Values specified and Actual seem to rise and fall together when logging so it's doing its job i think

Oil temperature sensor warning - intermitant. The guage is tempremental - Red herring is this going effect mpg?

Coolant Temp logs reflect the coolant guage and seems to rise OK up to 85 or so degreec C
Intake Air Temp ranges from 20 -30 degrees C

EGR duty Cylce 19.9% or 4.8 % most of the time? would this affect the MPG?

Where do I go next?

Any ideas would be great. I have several Vag com logs if i need more data then I can post?

coolant temp should be 90 degrees ?

what was the temp for the thermostat you got ?


Have you got one on your car / replaced the fuel temp sender unit ............................. also the coolant temp sender unit you replaced, what colour was the new one & have you considered the new one is faulty / replace with a genuine one ?



Can you do an Italian tune up, keep the car in 2nd gear and boot the car for several hundred yards with you holding the revs just under the red , to clear out the exhaust. You will need to do this once a month or so . Then RESET the computer in the car

Also is the timing correct when the camshaft belt was changed ?

Are you taking into account that the cold winter air affects mpg , especially if we get the blast of cold air over the next few days

If you can get hold of another MAF you could run it with that to get comparison figures. Alternatively, try it with the MAF unplugged.
If all your journeys are short town trips then the mpg is correct.
I thought the readings should be closer-there should be an option to get a graph on VCDS.
Is the MAF genuine?

Thanks for input!
Coolant temperature goes up to 90.1 on vagcom after a run so I think this is Ok. I think the sensor I replaced was blue? I think the green one did not fit. The temp looks OK though no? Is there a way check if it's faulty if reading OK? I don't know if I have fuel temp sender will need to research, never replaced one.. Yes to diesel filter, I gave it full service.
The car runs well performance wise so assume timing is OK. I think the mpg was bad and on wane before timing belt!

My old A6 1.9 tdi gave 640 miles to a full tank of diesel in town driving, 740 miles and above if I went motorway driving, BUT dropped to 540 miles if the weather cold ....................... ticking over defrosting the windows etc kills fuel economy ...................... cold air


Anyway , the old chips for retuning cars basically told the ECU that it was colder than what it was and the car defaulted to pumping more diesel into the engine


If you fill your car up with fuel, how far can you get on a full tank of diesel ?

I change gear around 2,300 rpm to 2,700 rpm , a lot of people don't, they tend to change too low in revs and think their engine is going faster than what it is; I like the turbo working as it saves fuel & I hate seeing big black clouds of unburnt diesel going out my exhaust !!

I haven't calculated how many miles to full tank so will do that. Trip gauge is what I am using. It was like this all through the summer also so temperature doesn't seem to effect it. If I drive it fairly hard the mpg doesn't really go down much either. After 1 hour drive it might go to 36 mpg if I'm lucky. I haven't changed the Maf it looks oe I think. I'll try and graph it on vag com tomorrow. Unfortunately I don't have access to a spare but happy to bite the bullet if it'd worth a crack. I did wonder if the Maf results were a little sporadic through rev range but I don't know what is normal and how accurate it should be!

The MAf as a rule of thumb ........................... or certainly older ones ...................... I used to replace around the 50,000 mark, but they fail rather you notice a downward spiral, usually as the turbo kicks in the car goes into limp mode with the yellow engine management light on; switching engine off & restarting it will clear the fault until the turbo kicks in

I don't know what the MAF sensor graph should ideally be running at

I think its around £45 for a MAF, but that's what I paid years ago !!

Do you know how to reset the computer to get the MPG recalculated ?
