Have got xenon adaptive headlights, and about 30 seconds after the lights come on, the offside light goes out and get a message on the dash. Turn car off and same thing repeats.
I was passing Halford branch, and asked after a new bulb. They thought it was unlikely to be the bulb as usually they either work or not at all; chap there thought it more likely that a capacitor linked to the lamp had gone, and it would be a trip to a VW dealer to get sorted.
Anybody else come across this ? Will this be a 10 minute job or do I need a bank loan ?
Annoyingly, car is 3 years 2 months old ... so just out of warranty 😕

So...took it into the local VW dealer who, to be fair, had researched possible solutions to problem in advance and had ordered in the replacement parts they thought might be needed.

Dealer guide to sorting dodgy CC headlight bulb :

Step 1 : upgrade the headlight software - made no difference (who knew that headlights needed software!!).
Step 2 : take headlight units out and swap bulbs over from driver side to passenger and vice versa and retest. Passenger side now playing up, so clearly bulb is at fault
Step 3 : ring up customer and tell him the bad news...it's out of warranty, and no goodwill gesture from VW so that will be £350+ for parts and labour, please. Half that cost is the bulb !!!
Step 4 : listen to customer politely argue that if this had happened 10 weeks ago whilst vehicle was still under warranty there would have been no charge
Step 5 : revise cost, ring slightly less grumpy customer with good news
Step 6 : fit new bulb, realign both headlights and valet the car

So I got it sorted, but am still disappointed that (1) replacing a headlight bulb is such a faff, (2) the bulb is so expensive, and (3) VW were unwilling to contribute. This is CC #3 for me, and I have replaced the others at around the 3 year mark, so this incident makes me wonder about the longer term running costs of the car, but as I will be changing it in a couple of months then I won't be worrying too much.
The dealer was pretty good actually...kept me up to date with what they were trying and seemed to do their best to reduce their labour charge.
