Averaging 47mpg in my old 177ps pre facelift. When I get to drive it.

Im quite surprised the average is that low for the ultra to be honest, my 272 is averaging 42 too and other than a couple of 200 mile round trip motorway runs the rest of the driving has been fairly short town and local a/b road driving so I would have expected the ultra to be a good 10+ mpg average better in real world conditions?

My A6 s-tronic ultra has averaged 44 mpg over 55000 miles. Given what people are reporting for their 3.0's I think I'll be moving to V6 power next time...

My 272 Quattro Avant is averaging 43 mpg on 20" rims. Mix of 75% motorway and 25% A road/ town driving. Now at 7k miles, so may still have a little loosening up to do. My pre-FL 177 Multi Avant did 45mpg average. Very happy with the 3.0 and unless I'm strapped for cash unlikely to go back to the 2.0 at change time.

Mine's a Quattro which obviously makes a difference. My mate has a 2WD Ultra and he get's 55+ on a regular basis albeit knowing he's that tight he hardly uses his air conditioning lol

My long term economy this year is just under 60mpg, and I always use the air con!
When I had my first 'Ultra' back in 2014 I remember getting this figure on the dash

I have to admit we were descending about 500 feet on our way back from the Scottish highlands on this run, but it does just show how much elevation change can warp short term fuel figures

The best I've ever seen (but no photographic evidence unfortunately) was 138mpg after about 15 minutes of driving. This was at the start of our journey back from skiing at Easter so there was a fair amount of coasting! Didn't take long to drop back down to normal once we'd got down to a more normal altitude.

My 3.0 272 has now averaged (around 1500 miles since purchase) at 44 so i think that change is probably worth considering!

Since my last post, I have managed 57 mpg on a long run, so I think my long term average must be brought down by my 13 mile each way cross-country commute... I have been to look at a BiTdi, but couldn't justify the £8-10k cost to change to a six month older car in worse condition than mine. Might go down the 272 route.

I do think it strange that my 10yr old 4F quattro has managed 960 miles on an (albeit 85l brim filled) tank, plus I've taken the average overall economy from 33.3 mpg on purchase to 39.1 in my 5yrs of ownership

Best I've had on a looong 400 mile non-stop trip was 59mpg....so to me it doesn't seem that technology or economy has moved on much.

Now in a Toyota C-HR hybrid which over 3000 miles has delivered 66mpg, although it's the first car I've driven which is less economic on M'way than it is in urban...I save the Audi or Jag for those long M'way miles instead

As has already been mentioned, correct tyre pressures, an empty car, ambient temps, average speed and driving economically (so coasting up to a delay or a junction instead of applying the brakes) makes a huge difference.
