    Help my 1997 a4 tdi is steaming up the screen as soon as I put any heat on it I have to have heater on cold to clear the screen I have removered the pollen filter as I was told this might be the reason but it still keeps doing it the air con has been removed can any one help

    Check your footwell in the middle mate, see if carpet is damp, either way, I would suspect your heater matrix has gone.... Check your coolant level as well.

    Just topped up header bottle and there is a smell of antifreeze in the car if I put on hot so I think it is leaking I can see water has run down from the heater from the bottom vents I bet it's not a easy job to replace it I guess I gotta take the whole dash and and heater out to get to it

    So far as I am aware, yes it's a dash out job. Find and read col's Passat diary in the B5.5 Passat section. I know yours is an A4 but B5 is B5 on the most part....

    From that, yes, your matrix has definitely had enough unfortunately.

    There is a small chance I could be wrong and the older A4's were put together different and it's easier than the later passats, time will tell.

    Think I have temp fixed it with radweld for now witch will be nice if it lasts till spring then I will replace it
