    Hello everybody,

A few months ago I purchased a 2001 Audi A6 Avant quattro 2.5 TDI tiptronic (AKE/FAU) with 155,000+km on the clock. While exiting an off ramp a few nights ago the car lost power and began shaking. I had the car towed to my house where I proceeded to remove the passenger side valve cover only to discover that it had spit a cam follower coupled with severe camshaft wear. I had already known about the camshaft issues with this motor before purchasing the vehicle, however the price was right, and had planned on upgrading/tuning this engine anyway.

After studying the forums, particularly threads and posts by fjtwelve, adamss24, & bigdiffas, I now have a good idea of what tuning route I wanna take. For instance, since I already have to replace the camshafts, I was thinking of upgrading to a roller type head such as a BAU, BDG, or BDH (there might even be others that I'm unaware of).

I would like to get as much reliable power as possible (quattro A6 weighs nearly 2 tons). So for starters, should I just port and polish the AKE heads, stick in a hardened cam and move on to the rest of the project (turbo, nozzles, torque converter, remap, etc.)? Or, find a set of roller heads (although I'm not exactly sure which B-series head to choose.). Also, it's my understanding that an AKE camshaft will fit in the roller heads giving more lift/duration, but not the other way around?

So, for those of you in the "know", would you kindly point me in the right direction?

ok, haven't touched the car yet as I'm still planning this project...

Since I don't hava a bau, bdg, bdh head to compare; does anyone know if I can just swap in the roller rockers into the ake heads? From what I gathered on etka, the heads appear to be the same casting. The roller heads use 27.2 x 6 x 100.6 intake valves, and 24.1 x 6 x 100.7 exhaust; whereas the AKE uses 27.2 x 6 x 100.5 & 24.1 x 6 x 100.5 respectively. These minute differences fall into what I'd call, approved tolerances. Although , the rollers use 12 x 32.6 hydraulic lifters while the AKE uses 12 x 35's. The latter seems to me like a difference I should pay attention to.

Now, if I was to just swap in the roller rockers (and perhaps the coinciding lifters) in an AKE head with AKE solid cams, would everything fit, or am I way off here?

No. Different cylinder head. Different hydraulic valve lifters Different camshafts. My AKE engine has a BAU heads. You can buy a used BAU Complete engine heads. (I just bought allroad 04 after an accident for 600$)

If you plan to boost up the engine and also to keep the car for a while, your hardened cam plan is a no go. Audi did put in the best cams money could buy meaning you won't find better camshafts than oem again meaning whatever cams you put in there, they will die . . .
It's a construction issue, go for B heads ( that's what Audi did too )
