I recently purchased a second hand Audi A4 b6 2.0 ALT engine code with a 6 speed gearbox with about 120,000miles on it.

The car runs perfect when the car has just been turned on and parked over night. However, when operating at normal temperature it appears to slip out of gear one when you come to a dead stop and engages in neutral. You would need to press the accelarator a bit hard to get it going again in drive with a harsh jerk felt. No problems once in motion and other gears engage fine.

No fault codes via VAG-Com have been found. I plan to check the transmission fluid level tomorrow. Also the car had been parked for approximately 6 months and this is only second day on the road.

Has anyone had a similar experience with this?

once you change the oil ...................... look up youtube in how to align vw gearbox with the two rods

the gearstick should be between 3rd & 4th gear

I gently prise off the 3 plastic lugs and wire brush the threads they sit on, then grease it to stop rusting ................... but it might be bone dry where you live ?

I'm no expert, but when I had "thumping" into gear on mine, it was because the clutch-pack was shot on the gearbox.....ultimately it cost Audi a new gearbox on mine as it was totally stuffed.

You probably want to find out how to do the gearbox adaption process - not sure how to do that, but it's done after each fluid change and does a re-calibration of gearbox/clutch-pack (I believe) and re-base-lines the setup. That said, if it's dropping out of gear, and adaption doesn't fix it, then it's probably time for a new clutch-pack or worse.

What's the maintenance history been like on the gearbox. They are sticklers for fluid replacement on-time or early, and lots of cars it slips under the radar as it's not a service item (you have to request it) and the number of dealers that leave the guesswork to the owner means a lot get the first change missed, and perhaps the second...

If it's done a lot of short journeys, 120k would be about the top end you'd expect from the clutch pack anyway, and a new one is expensive....
