    Hi people,

having rarely had a major issue with my mk2, I ran into a major problem one month ago that has grounded my car since :-(

The issue is carburettor overflow (from the top) right after starting the engine which leads to the motor cutting out completely within three seconds. The carb is new territory for me so I require some help looking into this. I am on the continent right now and haven't been able to locate a garage that would look at the car because of the holidays so I was hoping that maybe someone could direct me to an appropriate tutorial ?

My car is a 1985 Golf mk2, 1.6, 75hp and the carburettor in question is a Pierburg 2e2. I have had the carb completely serviced and cleaned at the end of June so it is possible that something has not gone according to plan in the process - the garage is playing dead and does not answer my calls. The only thing that I can say is that the carb ran relatively fine (except in winter when cold when it showed a small pulldow issue when starting the cold engine)

I now want to seperate the top part of the carb from the lower part without taking it out completely and without damaging any of the seals (for which I don't have replacements) in order to check if the floater is maybe damaged or stuck. Maybe someone has a few useful real-life pictures for me that could help me conducting those checks as I have never done this before. There might be other checks to perform ? I tried the Haynes manual but I really need more than that in terms of real pictures to see what has to be done.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated !

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts !

    Regards,

    Nick

View topic: HOW TO: Repair your troublesome 1.6/1.8 2e2 carb – The Mk1 Golf Owners Club This seems to cover everything

I was never much good with carbs, just could do very basic adjustments

You used to get a Colortune sparkplug for getting the fuel/ air mix when I was a boy ..........................................

Are you sure the carb is faulty ?

The MK 2 Pierburg is something of a disaster. Many years ago I had a1800 GL with this fitted and after quite a few wax-stats and pulldown units I fitted a weber conversion.
Eurka ! all problems disappeared and fuel consumption significantly improved.

Fitting the Webcon UK Weber conversion is a revelation, I have fitted literally hundreds of them over the last 30 years. They are a bit crude and the manual choke is not to everyone's liking plus they are very sensitive to carb icing in the winter unless the air filter hot exhaust pre heat air feed system is perfect but they work and the 2E2 doesn't. You simply can't service a 2E2 anyone, the proper parts such as needle valve and power valve are almost impossible to get and even when they were, properly rebuilding a 2E2 cost more than the Weber kit!
