Hi there. I had similar issues with my auto box. My code scan was showing an issue with the transmission position sensor which is located on the side of the gearbox. It was also showing up faults with the door modules which I had already fixed. All seemed well with the transmission control module which I thought was located under the carpet on the front left side of the vehicle. However,I eventually decided to look under the carpet on the right side. Boy was I surprised to see the amount of water there. It had come in from the plenum chamber which was blocked. I dried what I could, put a dehumidifier in for 3 days and got about 2 litres of water out. I have had no problems since doing this.
It's worth checking out before you go any further.

Thanks for the very helpful feedback.
I have now discovered that it was the selector switch on the side of the autbox that was sticking.
I didn't even have to replace the switch because moving the selector lever through all the gears several times managed to free it up.
I have already bought all the components to change the oil and so I will go ahead and do this as a routine service.
    With kind regards
    Nick

I did eventually have to replace the neutral selector switch but bought a unit from China on eBay. The unit was indistinguishable from the original and less than a third of the VW part price. It's working fine. I still haven't changed the oil yet.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions.
