Oldish thread but may help someone else. Ordered a space saver with my 7-seater Touran when bought new back in the noughties and have had to use it 3 or 4 times, most recently in the office car park this month. It lives lashed in the boot, 7 seats is rare for us these days but it will just about fit in the gap between row 3 and the tailgate if needed. Part Number was 1K0601011 and it was £150 +VAT. The supplied pump will get it to 60psi and when I actually came to use it this time the pressure was still bang on correct.

On one service VW told me my gunk was past it's sell by date...threw it away.

Any suggestions which of the towbar mounts are best and least likely to damage other parts of the vehicle. I've just got my touran and don't want to start having to trust gunk in an emergency.

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this forum but was active on ClubTouran until it's, err, 'demise'. Anyhow, jut thought I'd post a few pics of my answer to this problem. I don't fit it when I'm local to home but traveling any distance it's nice to know it's there. I put it together as an experiment, and 11 years later I'm still using it!

Frame welded up from strip steel etc.

Tubes mount onto bike rack uprights and secured with an R clip.

Number plate mounts and light welded on, wheel strapped in place. The no. plate light is on a 7 pin plug so to open the boot you just unplug the light, remove the R clip and lift the whole unit off in one.

We had many discussions on the old forum about this self same issue. Top box was ok if you could lift the wheel up there, skinny in the boot was ok as long as you remembered that if you used it you needed enough space in the boot for a full size wheel once you'd changed it!

As far as towbars go, I couldn't get VW to fit one as I wanted a 2 bolt iso mounting and they didn't seem to understand my requirements. Also, as it would be fitted by an outside contractor they would only fit a bypass relay system with a buzzer for the trailer indicators and as the Touran is capable of supporting the socket via the canbus I wanted it done properly. So I got my friendly local Peugeot specialist to order me one direct from VW with the correct VW loom.
I believe the actual manufacturer is Westfalia. In short, remove the back bumper, undo 4 bolts and remove the bumper iron, replace with modified bumper iron, cut a small clearance notch in the bumper and refit. The electrics weren't anywhere near as simple but came with good clear instructions and worked without programming but didn't operate the bulb fail system. My original VW dealer refused to program the electrics regardless of being given all the pick tickets and VW id/barcodes of the parts fitted as they still said it wasn't VW! Went to another dealer, got it all done in 30mins!

A lot of rambling for a first post but I hope it's of use to someone...
    Rob.

    Thankyou.
The original plan was to use the bolts that fit the neck to the bumper beam so removing one bolt uses the other as a pivot allowing the wheel to lay face down and the boot to be opened - never got that far though!

Wow, i've been searching for something like this for ages. The lack of a spare tyre is like a no-go for me when buying a car and keep looking for solutions. Yours is the first i see and rocks.
However, i would improve it somehow to let me open the boot more easely, like a towbar mount that can fold down or to the side.
