My car is now 5 years old and (touch wood) the GPS Navigation still works very well but it could do with updating (eg it does not accept post code destinations and the maps are for 2010).
Has anyone experience with updating the system with a VW supplied disc? I am slightly apprehensive as I woudn't be too happy messing around with a 5 year old laptop that was performing OK.
    Thanks for any info.
    Mike

To show current map version press and hold the set up button for 10 seconds, then select version information
Dealer will then tell you what's latest available according to your RNS510 version.
AFAICR postcodes were added sometime later than 2011 (?)

There are also firmware upgrades available, on the same update. Would have to know what your model number is to say what's latest.

I am unable to find the version by pressing the Set Up button for more than 10 seconds. I assume my version is pre this facility (car built 2010).
The local VW guy, who seems reasonably knowledgeable, said I can just put in a CD for latest maps (mine is Europe West V6.1).
Would I need to update the firmware for the system?

My Passat is same age as yours, 60 reg. When I took it in to my local VW to have the emissions update done, I asked about a Nav update, they said the latest disc would cost £160. I said not to bother at that cost.

As a matter of interest how does the car run after the emissions update?

I'm member of GPSUnderground which has maps and firmware updates for nearly every GPS unit in the world.
It also has sets for RNS510 (Firmware as well as Maps)
Very trusted source for anything GPS related.

I've been dealing with maps for a while myself so if you struggle to get this working or need any assistance I can help.
I'm in Northampton so if you aren't too far away can also arrange some time for you to come over. Will see how can I help with your struggles

To be honest, I can't say I've noticed any difference in performance or fuel usage.
