    Hi All,

    My car:

    Golf MK6 2009 2.0TDi 140 GT (6speed)

Yesterday while driving on the motorway the car went into limp mode with the engine light coming on and the glow plug light flashing, when i got home i plugged in the diagnostic unit and cleared all the errors to ensure i was not looking at anything old/intermittent misfires etc. Obviously this did not fix the problem but i wanted to do a re-scan to see what actual errors there was, below is a result of the scan

    ______________________________
    001617 - sensor reference voltage B

    P0651 - 000 - Open Circuit - MIL ON
    fault status - 11100000
    ______________________________

Now according to the local garage (which i confirmed researching the problem) the voltage at the sensor should read 5vdc (rail voltage) at present this measures 7vdc which is "possibly" the core of the problem. The garage wants to pull the ECU and send it to a specialist ( +/- 2 weeks to be returned ) to diagnose and confirm if the ECU is faulty / responsible for the incorrect 5vdc rail which is now measuring 7vdc. I have also read up about the possibility of the engine wiring loom chaffing at some point in the engine bay and causing wires to short against each other which could also be a culprit. Other than first removing the ECU and posting that off to a specialist is there anything else anyone could recommend / advise we try first that could perhaps help establish more certainty with our suspicion towards the ECU.

Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be welcome.

PS! i am new to this forum and have read "most" of the rules for newbies and fairly sure i followed them with as much respect possible, so please if i have indeed missed anything i should not be asking, saying, or doing i will apologise upfront and please feel free to correct me and point me in the right direction.

    Kind Regards,
    Theo

    Welcome to the forum Theo.

This code isn't easy to diagnose and fix, as you say the garage has suggested sending your ecu to a specialist, which is along time off the road. You could find someone with VAG-COM\VCDS to try and investigate the voltages?

    VAG Error Code: 17035/4124/001617
    EOBD II Error Code: P0651

    Fault Location:
Sensor Reference Voltage 'B' - Open Circuit

    Possible Cause:
    Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

    Fuse(s).
    Wiring/Connector(s).
Engine Control Module (ECM) harness is open or shorted.
Engine Control Module (ECM) circuit poor electrical connection.
Shorted sensor on 5 volt circuit.
    Engine Control Module (ECM).

    When is the code detected?:
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected the sensor 5 volt reference circuit voltage is higher or lower than expected.

As taken from my new EOBD II Error Codes

As I ask all new users even though this is the Mk6 Golf section which covers many variations its nice to see you car spec in your signature as most regular users do.
2010 Golf GTD (170) CBBB, 5 Door, Shadow Blue (P6/D5Q), Flat Tyre Indicator, Basic Protection Pack + VCDS.

    Hi KiethUK,

Sorry for the delayed response, but i have been traveling and out of office, firstly thank you for the information provided and the fast response. To answer your main question as far as i remember the only error on the engine was the single error code i mentioned, however i did not do a full complete scan of the complete car. The local garage has pulled the ECU and sent it off to the specialist, when it comes back i will definitely keep this post updated and be sure to post the steps that was taken to solve the problem in detail so that hopefully others experiencing the same issue could maybe find it useful.

But for now i thing it will be at least a 7 days before i have any news about the ECU, will keep you posted though.

    Kind Regards,

    Theo

Anyone know how this was resolved?

I've just had the same P0651 code come up on a 2012 Tiguan 2.0TDi
