    Hi

I have a A6 2.4 V6 and when it is started cold there is a strong petrol smell for the first few miles then it goes away but I have been getting some pretty poor fuel consumption, I am getting around 300 miles to a tank which seems pretty poor even for a large car like this, can anyone shed any light on this ? the car has 85k and has been well looked after and runs lovely and smooth with no other signs of a problem.

is yours an estate or saloon?
is it an auto or a manual?
    is it quattro?
what proportion of your mileage is urban:extra urban?

    book figures quote

    20 urban
    37 extra urban
    29 combined

Based on a fuel tank of 70 litres with a mileage of 300, you're getting around 19 mpg.

book figures are typically optimistic by up to 20% so I'd expect to see an average of ~23mpg for your car - you're not far adrift of that, given the age of vehicle and the absence of the above factors being taken into account.

How long have you had the vehicle?

It wouldn't hurt to check the temp sender as above.
