Engine codes?

Can someone please explain engine codes, my mk5 1.9 golf is a BXE, and ive been told that if im looking to mod, an AWX is more suited, but what difference are the engines? Detailed explanantion please !

who klnows what the differences are. you can have 15 identical engines all with different codes but all seemingly the same. some might have a higher power output, one might have a forged crank, one migh have some longer bolts, there is no reason to it. in this case theough, the bxe will self destruct and an awx wont. the awx was probgably as good as they got really, 130 bhp and mega high miles without failure. often found in audi a4's. the mk4 golf had the arl in it, almost identical to the awx. in fact, some had the same injectors, some had different injectors, but all made 150 bhp but they do have a habit of wearing cams out.
