I've had my S-tropic's circuit board replaced under warranty.

Statistically the s-Tronic seems to be relatively higher in complexity and more fault-prone.

It May have a heat exchanger and designed to run at x degrees c regardless of ambient temperature but I'm sure it's not tested to the extent of for example a Toyota Hilux - from extreme driving in the Alaskas to the Sahara.

I can't imagine them agreeing to replace a whopping $22k unit foc sans labour out of warranty! Maybe economics of dealing with reputation are very different out there.

As for the rest of us running s-tronics, Safe to have a warranty I suggest.

tiptronic(ZF) has heat exchanger too, gearbox is cooled in summer and warmed up in winter to reach normal working temperature and stop friction.

Stronic on the other hand, was pushed as first in Audi A5, there is a lot information, complains from user, often mechatronics failures, also clutches, one gearbox failed at 3k miles!

if I would have a choice I would always go for tiptronic (ZF) instead s-tronic

    Hi All,

Just thought I would post about this for your info.

I had this fault occur about a week ago and gradually got worst throughout the day until in limp mode I managed to get home then tried it again the following day and it took about 10 minutes before it flashed up then over the next 20 minutes more often then into constant limp mode. I read the codes which showed this up happening 46 times in the one day saying Torque Restriction due to clutch temperature, cleared these but came back again as i thought it would.

My car is the 3.0TDI s line quattro 245 and has 114k miles with full audi history with the last gearbox oil change at 98k.

I decided to checkout an indy specialist in Cannock called Midland VW which seem to having glowing reviews across the forums. I have to say there were excellent, diagnosed the Mechatronic boards (known TSB) needed replacing and all fixed done in 3 days from start to finish without any hassle. Apparently the lamination on these boards isn't great so eventually fail due to high temp in oil thus producing false readings.

So new improved boards, filters, seals and oil replaced and ready to go so fingers crossed now!

    Cheers
    Neil

Thanks. All in £875 which included new mechatronic board, seals etc, new filter and complete oil change, 6 hours labour. Obviously not happy with the fault but very pleased with the swift efficient service from these guys provided and price.

Only thing is now I'm just a little concerned of what might come up next but that might be paranoia setting in!

My D4 A8 had a gearbox issue. The gearbox fluid temperature sensor solenoid thing had failed, but in the Open position, so the gearbox was always cooled. Lucky for me.

other than that, the gearbox was fine. They found the fault as it was logged in the computer as they changed the fluid.
    Which was just as well....
