It seems that replacing whole units rather than checking for smaller sensor related issues is a policy, at least here in Kuwait where we only have one authorised delear, it is an internal failure, we won't bother looking further, swap the box, job is done !
and I am not sure how is this going to affect the engine or other systems in the car in general ?? Should I be worrying about other related glitches ?? Or should I just get rid of the car !

They should manage to tell you the fault codes. If they are swapping under warranty I would let them do it.

If they do it under warranty, then they can't charge labour costs. Even if they treat it as a goodwill, a brand new gearbox can't be treated as a free of charge service part.

If they charge labour costs, but will give him a new gearbox - then it's the most strangest idea I ever heard.

I'm just wondering, why it's a business for Audi to replace an out of warranty, and an approximately ~5-10.000 USD value gearbox for free. To replace this unit for 1.100 USD in a factory service, for me it sounds more then a bargain, it sounds too good to be true. Please refer to their original offer, as they told the costs could be as high as 22.200 USD. So, I'm just wondering, did they really offered 1.100 USD for the replacement, and not 11.100 USD for this service, as 11.100 USD could be a plausible 50% goodwill.

I imagine the pricing structure is quite unique in Kuwait, and probably difficult to compare to other countries.

    Thanks guys,
car milegae currently is 79000 Kilometres..
I really have no explaination either, car was under warranty for 3 years, which ended last January. First of all they told me The new gearbox is going to cost 22.000 USD and my reaction was NO ! Thank you I will be collecting my car today, then I got a second call from the service advisor who told me that we talked the manager in charge ( German gentlman) and after looking at the history of my car they agreed to replace the gearbox for FREE ! Yes for free while charging me with only 1100 USD ( the cost of fitting the new gearbox)
