So the S-Tronic gearbox seems a no go? This is going to be my first Automatic car. Is the S-Tronic worse than the M-Tronic or is it simply a cost issue if they go wrong?

Most of my journeys will be short around the city. With occasional motorway use maybe twice a month. Would you recommend the 2.0 engines?

Is the black edition a much better spec than the s-line?
Thanks again for all the replies.

You need to test drive and compare the different boxes I would say.

    I've recently ordered a new A6 Avant S-line 2.0ultra S-tronic.

I currently drive a Merc c-class C250 sport plus estate with auto box (which was my first auto) and test drove the S-line A6 2.0 ultra with S-tronic box and was very happy, although appreciate a test drive isn't the same as living with a car in the long term.

My understanding is that the black edition gets a Bose stereo upgrade, larger wheels, 'black' styling cosmetics like different front grille and rear privacy glass over the standard S-line. I saw these as largely cosmetic and not worth the extra money, although the Bose stereo would be nice.

The black edition also got 'piano black' glossy dash trim inserts over the brushed aluminium inserts of the S-line. I preferred the aluminium inserts of the S-line but clearly thats a personal preference thing.

Not sure if much has changed regarding black edition over s-line since the recent MY17 new car changes.

Good luck with your selection and enjoy the hunting !

I'm making a move from the exact same car as Spapro but ive gon for the Black Edition Quattro.
I think all four pot auto's can be gruff when pushed as they hold onto the gears too long and 4 pot diesels don't sound great above 3.5k.

However overall its a great auto, arguably better than the Merc auto and they are meant to be amongst the best.

    Happy hunting

Not sure if Audi offer the multitronic box anymore. My choice would be s tronic before multitronic anyway. There hasn't been many issues reported with them otherwise the forum would be full of it. Get some test drives in and make your own mind up.

I don't think the s-tronic is (by any means) a "no no" but you do need to factor in oil changes (at 60k i think). Having said that my experience with the 6 speed tiptronic on the previous generation C6 was that the "sealed for life, no oil change needed" posture of Audi was total nonsense. Around 80k the boxes get grumpy and a "rather hard to do 'cos it was not designed in" oil change refreshes things nicely - albeit a bit expensive.
s-tronic in more powerful engines I'd get nervous about - there is a reason that Audi use the ZF tiptronic boxes in the BiTdi - and, interestingly, in the 3.0 petrol supercharged lump in the US, although it was offered with s-tronic here for a short while. My brother has one of the 3.0 petrol supercharged units in the US. He replaced his S4 with it. The S4 was basically the same engine but s-tronic and it had a number of issues with clunky changes which resulted in a load of parts changes (and a lack of confidence).
A6 allroad BiTdi (MY14, July 2013 - DAB & power tailgate). Glacier white, tech pack (HDD Nav, colour DIS, Parking Plus), sports seats, 4 zone climate, heated seats front and rear, ambient lighting, 75L fuel tank, adaptive Bi Xenon headlights

STronic oil change is @ 38000 and is £250. Other than that, I love it!
