You can ask them, but probably better not to raise the subject of compensation on here

Yes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The recall is utterly pointless, unnecessary and a huge risk.

Has anyone noticed any issues with increased engine noise after getting the fix applied?

I ask because this whole issue stemmed from the engineers trying to develop a way in which to lower the noise of diesel engines. Injecting more fuel into the engine caused it to run quieter, but increased emissions, and then the software was used to fool the emissions tests.

But if the fix involves removing the offending software, surely the engine noise must suffer?

The noise theory is not proven yet, the official line is that in Europe the emissions test software workaround is benign as we do not have the same punitively high standards as the six states of the USA which use the CARB emissions standards. Having said that, it does not explain why the 1.6 needs a tea stainer in the AMM and yes, people have complained about increased diesel knock. The simple answer is to not have the recall done and ignore it, in fact insist it is not done if your car is at the dealers.

I'm reluctant to have mine done too, mostly because of the "everything will be fine, don't worry" attitude of the letters from VAG, whilst providing no evidence of the effect (or not) of the changes. As I understand it, the "cheat mode" was originally developed as noise reducing strategy on other diesel engines (ie NOT the EA189's) but VAG engineers discovered they could use this mode during emission tests to reduce emissions. This makes me think that the change is basically to get rid of cheat mode & since no one ever drives their car in the manner or conditions that replicate the emissions test (don't get me started on that ) then on that basis no-one should experience any difference because there isn't one. Of course that would mean the "we've taken advantage of updated diesel technology" claim in the letter describing the update is a load of baloney but why lie to correct another lie? I'm in the wait camp.

I no longer own an Audi, a growing family dictated swapping to a Seat Alhambra!, but I just received the letter from Seat for the fix to be done.
I believe the Audi and Seat use the same 2.0 TDI engine? So maybe of interest here.

In the Seat letter they state that the fix may increase the consumption of AdBlue, and as such will fill up the Adblue tank after the software fix has been applied, and in addition issue a card that will entitle you to a further five free Adblue top ups.

I'm still in two minds whether to get it done or ignore it!
