Since December last year my HUD developed a fault whereby the display appeared as though there were rain drops on the display. This became worse over the months as if the display screen inside the HUD had shattered. Thanks to Goodeone, who diagnosed the fault as the HUD internal plastic mirror where the silver coating had disintegrated. Having sent me his old plastic mirror, I managed to get the mirror recoated and today we met up along with a windscreen removal chap. Having removed the windscreen and then the HUD, we dismantled the HUD and replaced the mirror. A job which took a couple of hours from start to finish and I now have a perfect HUD.

The cost was £60 windscreen removal and fitting £10 for recoating the plastic mirror, and £15 for a nice chat in a coffee shop. I spoke to my Audi dealer a few months ago and their solution was £1950 for a new HUD plus £300 fitting.

A big thanks to Goodeone for his enterprising solution.

Audi prices are shocking sometimes. Mine is in for a service and HUD rattle fix this weekend, I could fix it myself but it's their problem and under warranty so they can do it.

Brilliant fix! Well done guys for working outside the 'replace/can't repair' mentality.

Just dropped my car in for a service and mentioned my HUD rattle. I was straight away told that there was a known issue with them and there was a mod out which they would apply today.

How old are the cars (ish) when this fault arises and how common is it?

Goodeone is on this forum, so you can drop him a pm.

you will need to get your mirror resilvered first or you will have to remove the windscreen twice. I think Goodeone has a spare mirror or even a spare HUD.

A huge thanks to Goodeone!Replaced my HUD with his spare this weekend. Job went well, took 2/3 hrs for a fraction of the price Audi quoted me. No calibration needed, it just worked. I now have a spare HUD that just needs the mirror resilvered.
