I use a VAG 1552, the original VAG tester for cars up to 2002, which I bought on Ebay. It connects to my car and performs all functions perfectly.

I had a small problem with it which was solved (for no charge) by a specialist repair man in Canada, who also supplied me with a manual for the tester.

He contacted me in April with the following message.
"Hello R, I have a friend with a like new VAG 1552 for $400 C with VAG 1551/3C cable and VAg1551 OBDI cable & the language card is # 6 ,if you know of any one looking for a VAG let me know. Mike M"

$400 Canadian is about £230. Mike's website is ScanDi Tool, VAG 1552, Vag 1551 SALES & SERVICE

Thanks for that, but I'm not trying to buy one. I use 2 good garages near me for scans etc. The problem is the car won't connect to any scanners.
If I disconnect the abs module, then take it to be scanned,do you think it will connect and show the abs fault code.
Can anyone repair these on this forum?

I would expect a "good" garage to have a scanner which would "connect" to my car. Who exactly decided they are good?

My scanner has paid for itself by my not having to having had to pay for any scans - whether "connected" or not

Your missing the point I think.
The fault on my car is stopping a scanner talking to the car. The research I have done suggest aftermarket radio fitted ( standard radio fitted) or Abs module fault.
The 2 garages I use have previously scanned this car without any issue. The 3 bleeps and 2warning symbols on the dis is what needs fixing, but with this fault, the car is stopping these scanners from connecting to all menus on the car.
I need an repaired Abs unit, not a different scanner.

FrenchAudi is suggesting you buy your own scanner to perform your own troubleshooting, instead of wasting time getting to the garage and back (with no MOT, are you sure you're road legal?) and money paying for the scans, it would be more economical to buy a handheld scanner and troubleshoot at home.

Once you've managed to get a scan, you know you've fixed the fault causing the non scanning issue and you can ask the garage for support.

At least that's what I think he's suggesting.

    I'm sure there's a song about this.

If I remember correctly, the first verse is along these lines:

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole.

Yes, that is basically what I was suggesting.

But it was never mentioned that the 2 garages had previously scanned the car successfully, before an aftermarket radio was fitted.

The fault this can cause is fairly well known, and can cause serious damage to the VAG 1552 scanner (which I have), and also to other scanners which are not protected against stray voltages due to the installation of non-approved equipment..

See Ross-Tech: VCDS: Afterrmarket Radio Problem.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't notice you said you have a standard radio installed. I assume this was in place when the car was scanned successfully?

You mentioned getting your ABS module scanned off the car. I'm not sure this is possible, but it might be possible to get it tested by a repair specialist.

I found one in the UK by Googling and he tested and repaired a VW ECU for me at a very reasonable cost.

The two garages don't charge me for scans as they get my work. The MOT gets done by one garage and any work I cant or don't want to do goes to the other garage.
The std radio has always been installed. Its a fault found googling K wire. This can also stop connection to a scanner along with the Abs module fault.
Ref abs module scanned off the vehicle, I said if the abs module was un plugged would the fault code or scan work without it being plugged in.
If it wasn't plugged in, would the scanner connect to the car and show a fault code to prove the abs unit.?
I think I will be sending the unit off for repair.
    Thanks for your replies.
