I have an A3 2.0 TDI, however a couple of days ago, my car alarm was going off for no apparent reason. I reset it and though all was well until tonight when it went off again with no-one around or anything close by to set it off.
My question is, apart from the obvious, has anyone any idea of what this problem may be? Also, would the Audi Diagnostic plug-in pick up on this fault with it being intermittent?
    Thanks

Not sure what Audi tool you have so couldn't tell you if it will do/show what you want.

A scan using vcds would be best.

Until you find the source of the problem you could lock your car using the key in the door for now as that doesn't activate the alarm as far as I no.

Also it may be worth checking your battery as a battery that's on its way out can often cause car alarms to randomly go off.

It could also be one of the micro switches failing on one of the doors or the boot lock and wiring getting damp from the rear screen washer can cause similar issues from what I've heard.

I had it in at an Audi Specialist yesterday. They found two alarm faults which were re-set. We were hoping that would solve it, sadly it went off again this morning. I may try a new battery as he did say the battery may not be earthing or grounding properly, so ill try that. Failing that, its a two day job to find the wiring fault within the loom... and a hefty bill.

As for locking it with my key, that also sets the alarm off, even disabling the internal alarms from the diode button on the door recess.
