    Hi Everyone,

Hope you can point me in the right direction here. Just fitted a replacement tandem pump on A6 2002 1.9 TDI but didn't realise it needs priming. Tried cranking for a

while to no avail. Could anyone please tell me which hose in the picture I attach pump to prime the lines/pump?

it doesnt need priming other than with the in tank pump, so presuming you can hear that running for about 1 second everytime you turn the ignition on, simply flick the ignition on for a second or so, and repeat about 10 times. the car should then crank and start fairly quickly.

Thanks for the reply zollaf, however, as mentioned, tried to crank about 25 times or so. Other posts such as this one ( Vacuum/Fuel Tandem Pump Issues)
say the return from the filter needs to be primed. Any idea which one is that in the picture?

The return is the hose on the right at the top of the fuel filter (with the t-piece valve)

Ps zollaf are you sure a 2002 1.9 has an in-tank pump? My 2001 1.9 doesn't according to vag-cat diagrams

IMG_6160.jpgThanks for that mrnice. Attached the balloon pump in photo and started pumping with clear tube attached. All i get out is fuel and air. Any idea how long it would take to get just fuel coming through as engine still won't fire? Should I persevere as long as it takes?

Sorry I'm at the limit of my experience here, would have thought that would've worked fine unless there's an air leak somewhere else?

most pd engines have an intank pump, but some dont. if in doubt lift the cover on the tank and see if there are 2 or 4 wires. a failed in tank pump will really stop you being able to make it run as the fuel often wont pull through it.

Just to add that although the old PD 1.9's are self priming they can need a lot of cranking over to get going after the fuel lines have been opened up for a filter change etc.

You may get to the point where you think it is never going to fire or even deaden the battery. Keep going though 30 second (so as not to overheat the starter motor) bursts.

Thanks everyone for all your help, sorry I couldn't answer sooner, work got in way of tinkering. Managed to get the old girl going after persevering with pulling the fuel from every direction and hooking the battery to a portable charger. She runs sweet now and the original problem of low vacuum was solved by replacing the tandem pump and gasket. Sucks like f**k now. Lots of other questions about this car as I am in the process of getting it back on the road after 3 years standing gathering moss. Next question will be about removing headlight lens?? Really cloudy inside. I will head over to home page and start a thread/look for answers. Thanks again.
