I'm not 100% sure, but I think my engine was up to operating temp at least a few times when doing the adaptation and the 8 bit value was still 00000001. I remember doing the adaptation a few years ago and the value used to sit at all zeroes. I'll try warming up the engine and doing the adaptation again tomorrow morning, I lent my cable to a friend this morning.
Thanks a lot for pointing out what the number one in the end of the string is, I've been wondering that for a long time.

Significance of 8 digit number block

Significance when displayed digit = 1
    x x x x x x x x Adjustment conditions
    (display group 001)
    Operating condition
    (display Group 004)
    1 Not relevant Overrun
    1 Not relevant Idling speed
1 Air conditioner compressor switched on Part load
1 Idle switch open 1) Full load
1 Fault in lambda control 2) Not relevant
1 Throttle valve opened Not relevant
1 Speed above 2000 rpm Not relevant
1 Coolant temperature below 80°c Not relevant

    1) The problem may be the accelerator cable is set to tight
    2) Self-diagnosis will not register all faults, if a 1 is displayed even when no faults are stored, check Lambda probe and Lambda control in Measuring Blocks 008, display group 001

You were correct, the engine temperature is supposed to be between 85 and 105c, I read on ross-tech's website that it's supposed to be between 5 and 95c, I guess it's different for my engine.
Once I warmed my engine up to 90c and did the adaptation, the 8bit string of numbers was all zeroes, the rpm is 640 at idle, sometimes fluctuating between 550 and 672. However my problems persist. Still have severe vibration at idle, spark knock (car sounds like a diesel on acceleration).

With the engine running, going into Basic Settings 001 MUST make the idle speed lift up to around 1140>1400 rpm, if it does not there is a problem and if the eight digit binary block values all stay at 0 then you need to set your ignition timing using a strobe light at 6 degrees Before Top Dead Centre. This is a bit tricky to do but you use the 0 mark and set 6 degrees on your light or use the Z mark which is 6 degrees.

Got the timing done. The guy who did it insisted on doing it "by ear" but I talked him into doing it the proper way. The problems persisted after the timing was set. Bought some XADO Anticarbon, you're supposed to remove the spark plugs and spray it into the cylinders, wait 20 minutes and crank the engine so the crud shoots out. Did it, no crud shot out, the car started after 11 attempts and now the detonation is either completely gone or not noticeable. So that's one problem fixed.
The car still shakes like crazy at idle. I'm thinking of replacing the front crossmember bushings, since they are really soft when I squeeze them. Also, the little metal clip looking thing on the top of the front motor mount isn't where it's supposed to be (found out by reading the repair manual), so I'll be trying to align it properly.
Also the car recently passed the MOT inspection on it's own, which is surprising (people usually just bribe the inspectors here).
So the only problem I'm facing now is severe vibration at idle. (And I would still really like to increase the idle RPM but am starting to give up on it).
    Things I'll be trying next:
    Repalce the front crossmember bushings.
Attempt to align the front motor mount (I'm doubtful that this will cure the issue).

That is simply not right, it could be anywhere, I haven't heard a silly thing like that in years since people used to set the timing on Beetles by watching the points flash at TDC. Unless you know for sure that the timing is correct to VW spec you could be chasing a problem you thought was fixed.
