When driving along a country road the other night I switched from dipped to main beam headlights and lost all headlights for a second or so (which was quite interesting - luckily a bright moon was out!). Following this, I parked up and tried flicking between the two a few times but the problem didn't repeat until a few hours later. This time I was shifting from main beam to dipped.

The lights don't stay out for long so I don't think it's a short circuit or loose wire. It's just a temporary outage for a second or less before either dipped or main comes on as selected. I've also noticed that to flash the headlights during the daytime I have to pull the column stalk very hard towards me. I'm thinking this might indicate a problem with the column stalk switch?

    What do you think?

I think your right. First port of call is to replace that, although i believe the steering wheel and airbag need to come off, to remove the stalk....

There is a "how-to" on here. If you are considering doing it yourself, have a look at that.

    Good Luck

I'm getting a similar problem with the lights with but only manifests itself when changing from low beam to high beam. Oh, yeh and the steering has squeeked ever since I've owned the car-it sounds like foam rubber on the steering column-any ideas?
