    Hi all,

Every now and again, usually when it's cold, I start the car (A6 1.9tdi avant) and get three high pitched peeps and a red exclamation mark flashes three times, and I usually can see the traction control symbol flashes too, then all is ok. Today it happened three times and everytime the car started but then cut out immediately, at the same time I was getting the flashing key symbol on the dash. on the third time it started ok.

THe key symbol is apparently linked to the key and immobiliser system, but the handbook says the car would;t start at all if the key wasn;t the right one for the car...

I have checked brake fluid and steering fluid, both ok.

    Any ideas?

Any red lights mean stop as soon as you are able and don't drive the vehicle.

    If the light looks like this;

    (Not my image)

...then it's a brake warning. If the brake fluid level is fine, then it'll be low fluid pressure or a fault with the ABS.

Start with a fault code scan and work from there.

Considering selling my VCDS KEY-USB interface. If you're interested please contact me via PM or email.

HI Sam, thanks for the response.

Just to clarify, no red light stays on, it occasionally does the three flashes on start up. THis morning (which was very cold) it didn't. I will get the brakes checked out though, as the brake fluid level is fine.

If you have this option would be right to check for fault codes

    Its your battery

1st thing car does on start up ( I had your car) is check the battery has enough power to work the brakes.

As the car has just started and the alternator has not had a chance to charge battery, the battery will show as a fault.

Check the battery at a garage for a dud cell(s) . This should be free .

If the battery is fine, then check alternator output

The 2005 onwards A6 checks after 10 minutes the state of the battery, allowing the alternator a chance to charge the battery.

Cold mornings will expose any battery with dud cells
