07 A3 rear wiper and hatch lock

Evening all, my mate has just picked up a very nice 140 dsg 07 3 door.
The rear wiper has siezed and he has ordered a new motor etc
My question is, should the rear lock assembly only operate from the flip key or should you be able to open the rear hatch by pulling the switch/button above the rear number plate
My theory is that the wiper motor goes pop because the washer hose leaks into it, and that this leak potentially gets the rear lock assembly and kills that aswell.
We looked at three cars prior to purchasing this one and none of them open on the switch, only via the flipper key.
Is this normal on the A3 or am I barking up the wrong tree

Just to finish off the thread, we changed the motor and fuse etc and both the wiper and the lock work as one would expect
