I HAVE ABANDONED THIS THREAD, SINCE IT HAS CLEARLY BEEN HIJACKED BY THE PRO SMOKE TEST BRIGADE.
I WILL RAISE A NEW ONE IN DUE COURSE, IN THE HOPE THIS DOES'NT HAPPEN AGAIN.
Moderators, please feel free (as far as I'm concerned) to completely delete this thread.

I absolutely HATE the idea of the MOT smoke test unecessarily thrashing my car, for a pointless test.

I've read that the A5 3.0tdi has a rev limit in neutral of 2500rpm, to protect the engine. Lucky them!

Can this be done to an A6 (C6) 3.0tdi? If so, how, and at what approximate cost?

had my car tested today, on the smoke test it said 4800 rpm, does that mean they tested it at idle AND at 4800 ?
i've never took my car past 4000 revs for fear of blowing something up.

you should be able to hold any diesel engine at max revs, foot to the floor, for an unlimited time, without damaging it. rev limiters are there for a reason.

The engine isn't under any load. Most manufacturers during engine development will rev an engine +20% over the normal limit for a very long time, equivalent to many 1000s of miles with no undue harm.

Those that don't understand that revving an engine to it's absolute maximum UNLOADED (as it is in this pointless 'test'), simply don't understand what they're talking about.

Is anyone able to answer the question?

Ill try my A5 and see - I have both cars.

It s annoying - but at the end of the day the law says you need an MOT and if that is what is required then you are kind of screwed.

I fully agree that red-lining a diesel unloaded is not a nice way to treat it but have no option.

I blame the EU with their stupid rules so will be putting my X in the sod off Johnny Foreigner box

so what qualifies you to make such a statement. and what difference does loaded or unloaded make. you want an answer but don't like what you are being told which i don't get. i presume you must have a doctorate in diesel or something ????

I didn't ask for a debate, make any enquiry or infer any need for education regarding the smoke 'test'.

"I fully agree that red-lining a diesel unloaded is not a nice way to treat it but have no option." I agree, but objectively we don't yet know whether there is an option. I await your test result...
