I now have a HUD that's only problem is a flaking mirror which I am looking into having re-silvered a process that only costs a few pounds. This mirror is held in place with 2 screws and hopefully should be an easy process. Therefore anyone else with the same HUD problem as me and others who are out of warranty should have an easy cheap fix. As for why elsawin recommend you throw the HUD away if you open it I have no idea as mine is working perfectly.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the advise. I have been contacted by a Birmingham person who has one for sales for £400, but as I am up there next week, I will visit and inspect it first. interesting to note you comments about having the unit re silvered. The problem is that the windscreen will have to come out for a few days. You have got me thinking.

Hi the part number is 4g8 919 604 a. I have tried to up load a few pictures on my phone but it won't work, I will do it from pc later. If you want I could send you the mirror from my hud and you can re silver that, then when you take yours out to swap it you can send me your flaking mirror if that helps.

Hi All, please can you help in resolving yet another Continental AUDI HUD Corroding ! I too have been been quoted £2500 by Audi (Part only) which is clearly ridiculous. I have paid an auto electrician to get inside and he managed it (with minor dash removal but windscreen untouched)Audi HUD Corroded Mirror.jpg - but what now for the mirror - can it be removed, sent away / sprayed / replaced ?? PLEASE HELP !!

Yes it needs to be resilvered. I used a Basingstoke company called Thin Metal Films but they are expensive. You should get someone's to do it locally for about 20 pounds.

Old thread, but got the same issue.
Just thinking, can you use a semi transparent film, instead of the re-silvering?
Anyway, what is the prosesss called?, I need to find someone in Norway that can do it.
Did you do any write up on how to dismantle the HUD ?

    Best Kim

I wont have thought so. The idea is to reflect light, so you need to have a good mirror. At least chrome like.
Regarding dismantling, Goodeone did it for me, and rom what I can remember, it was fairly logical and straightforward as long as you have delicate hands.
