Does anyone recognise this rear axle? It's apparently from an Audi 100 Avant or an Audi 100 "All Road". They have lockers in them and ratio is 1:4.2 I think. That's all I was told when I got them in a job lot. I don't know what years and any other models that it's fitted to.

Does anyone have more information on these axles? I plan to use them in a 4x4 buggy with independent suspension. I've got two, but only one shown.

Also does anyone know why the pinions are so long on these axles? The long tail on them is just hollow and I can't figure what it's function is!

its long cos of the torque. when the car accelerates or brakes the diff kicks up and down. a long nose with a bush in the end has less force on it that a short nose with a bush in the end. its as simple as that.

Thanks. Do you know if the Quattro gearbox that these axles come from reverse the engine rotation? They come from Audi 100, Audi 200, also Audi S2 has similar.

I planned to use these for a 4x4 buggy, but they turn the wrong way when connected to a traditional 4x4 drivetrain (i.e. rear wheel drive gearbox mated to transferbox). Bit stuffed for what to do now. These axles are supposed to be very strong and they have simple lockers built in so they are good to use. I might have to ditch them or see about fitting additional custom mini gearbox to reverse direction.
