Ok so as a 'preventative' measure I purchased a gear driven oil pump and had a local mechanic swap out the old chain driven unit for the new, timing belt was also done at the same time. When car was back together my mechanic said it ran fine for a while then suddenly stopped (whilst idling). He stripped it back down to find the belt tensioner had come loose because the tensioner bolt had stripped out the thread in the block (I think he over torqued it basically) so the belt jumped a couple of teeth. When put back together he advised it seemed to run fine, but it's constantly blowing out blue smoke from the rear, very strong smell of burning and doesn't ever seem to let off, car also idles very rough until full warmed up. Car seems to drive ok once warm.

Any ideas where the oil could be coming from based on the above? I didn't think piston to valve contact would screw the piston rings, could it cause valve stem seals to leak? I can't take the car back to him now and I don't want to spend any more on a mechanic.

    Cheers

Timing belt still could be off. Timing can be checked in VCDS. There's so many "could be's" that'd fit your symptoms that you'd probably get many "could be's" in reply. But I'm not a diesel head -- there's many in here that are

So you'll have to spend more on a mechanic. Doubt whether there's an injector seal that's gone at the same time as this situation occuring.

You don't say where you are but a VAG indie shop would be preferrable. One that's got a VW Mastertech on staff
You don't say what engine code you have, or what engine, year, mileage

Have you removed the camshaft cover to check for top end damage? my thoughts where the oil could be coming from is that a piston has battered the valves and cracked the piston crown which is now scoring the liner wall letting oil up into the combustion chamber. I doubt you'd get away with a loose belt with no damage what so ever even at idle speed. from memory i think the tensioner nut only needs 20Nm, not much really. I could be wrong, sure there are guys here who've stripped engines after timing belt slips who maybe know more than me.

Why can't you take it back to the garage that 'fixed' it? They already admitted that something went wrong.

Hindsight is a great thing but.....'if it aint broke, don't fix it'.
