I think there is an egr cooler stat as well which should divert water round the engine until hot then open to the rad. Just from memory, sorry can't locate the flow diagram.

FYI, my 177 2.0 TDI multitronic NEVER cools down once it has reached proper temp (4 bars) unless I stop the engine.

I'd be concerned as so far you're not yet sure whether the temp is actually reported incorrectly (bad for you as it messes with your head!, but no damage) while as it should be engine-wise, or dropping due to too much cooling (bad for the car, potential damages down the line).

I'd go to the dealer, and drive him around on the motorway for 10 minutes. If the temp does not reach 4 bars and stay there when idling it is clearly a problem.

If you've got access to VCDS, activate the lap timer in the DIS - that'll show you the oil temp which is presumably reported from a different sensor. Obviously it won't match the water temp exactly but might give you an indication if it's way out.

Just to let you all know I took my car to Audi and they have said there isn't a fault with the coolant temp as they showed me a write up on their system all about how the coolant temp on some tdi engines can take a long time to get hot when the outside temperature is below 10 and when it does rise its normal for the temperature gauge to fluctuate between 90 and 50 when in traffic and at idle speeds so they told me it's nothing to worry about

The temp dropping back down whilst in traffic is NOT RIGHT; my MK4 Golf never did it, my A3 never did it and the A6 doesn't do it; even in these cold temps

Due to this thread I have been checking the temp gauge in mine recently (2014 3.0). Once it gets to 90c it never moves... in heavy traffic or on longer runs. I always use dynamic mode (hate eco).

Also been experimenting with the aux heater (auto or off) and it makes a difference on how quick the cabin heats up, but doesn’t seem to change the sub 5min to 90c.

Might be time for a second opinion from another dealer/specialist... especially if the one telling you there is no issue also supplied the car.

It was main dealer Audi that told me this today not the garage I bought it from and they did have a write up on their system and it described my ( problem / fault ) perfectly but yeah I might ask another dealer ?

My 2.0tdi a6 c7 was the same. I switched out the old thermostat with a new one and car quickly gets up to 4 leds( normal temp) and stays there. It's a right PITA to do though.
