Hi is it normal that my Audi A6 2.0tdi takes ages for the engine to get up to temperature ? The car runs fine and everything seems ok but the temp gauge doesn't move for at least 8 miles of driving and that's only two marks on the gauge and if I pull up with the engine ticking over it doesn't take long for it to drop back down to one mark on the gauge ! I've not had a car before where the temp gauge drops down after pulling over but not turning off the engine ?

Common for a diesel. As a design diesels generate very little heat which is why they tend to come with an auxiliary heater to aid the cabin heating system on colder days

Has the behaviour changed in the time you have owned the car? Did it heat up more quickly in the past? Diesels do take longer than petrol engines to warm up but, once they have reached operating temperature, the gauge should be rock steady, not drop down. Personally, I think the thermostat may be sticking open.

I was on the M60 a couple of weeks ago in the cold spell. Whilst going through the roadworks I noticed my temp gauge had dropped to 1 bar. This was after a 100 mile drive so maybe they are just efficient.

I've only had the car 3 weeks so it's always been like this with me

should still get to 90 and stay there, even on a really cold day. does the heater blow out piping hot air ? sounds like it needs a new thermostat if the heater is only luke warm after 8 miles.

Then I suspect you need a new thermostat, too!

As Zollaf says, modern engines get up to temperature quickly and stay there. The needle should never move, unless you are towing a caravan in the Alps.

The heater gets hot but the engine temp gauge takes ages to go up , are the thermostats easy to fit on these engines ?

I see from another post that your car is a 177 engine. I would say in comparing that engine with the 190 (ultra engine) it definitely takes longer to warm up so it may not be anything wrong, but worth checking . You don't say where you bought the car from but if it was from a dealer of any sort then take it back to them as any fault in the first 6 months is there responsibility to fix. If it was from an auction or private sale then it is different
