Just bought a 59 plate A4 AVANT 2.0 TFSI S Line S Tronic Quattro from an independent dealer about 100 miles away from home.

Drove around in it before buying it, gearbox felt a bit stuttery when in slow moving traffic, seemed to clear up, bought it and drove home (fast) with box in S mode with no bother.

Not far from home decided to open the car up a bit and was presented with 'Gearbox malfunction, You can continue driving to a limited extent' no power behind the loud pedal and car coasted off motorway at about 50 mph losing power to about 30 mph and chugged along at that. Took box out of S mode into D mode and it seemed to come back to life, error went, no limited driving.

Decided to take it out again 30 mins later for a drive around in D mode only and it gave no issues at all.

Going to go to transmission specialist garage in morning and organise having it looked into.

Is this a known bad box ?
Is there something I can suggest to them that needs doing / changing ?
Am I about to become bankrupt ?

Thanks for any help in advance

When was a gearbox service last carried out?

I'd be letting the dealer sort the issue as you have a 6 month warranty by law. Getting it looked at by someone else may invalidate this.

Its got 88,000 on clock and Full Audi Service History,
its had the S tronic oil & filter done at 40000 and possibly again @ 84000

Dealer gave me a limited £2k warranty that applies to any garage that is VAT registered (so they said)

I'd be checking with the supplying dealer before doing anything.

The s-tropic boxes are known weak points - didn't you do any research before buying the car? (Don't mean that to sound like a *****)

Talk to the supplying dealer. Where are you based? I had a similar message on my S4 - I have a very good local specialist.

Yes I did do some web based research but got lost in multi tronic, S tronic, mechatronic, sub atomic, nuclear fission etc

I'm waiting to hear back from dealer about there warranty claims process.

I'm only 30 mins away from you in Manchester but there's a local transmission specialist garage who does most of the boxes around here, I have used them before and been happy with there service. That will be my next call for a diagnostic.

What was the issue with yours in the S4 ?

Gearbox has died, car was extremely violent in its attempts to move this morning, horrible.

Dealer has said they will come collect it and refund me my money.

So.............. Time to ask another question on another thread

It was a clutch overheating issue.

Mine was fixed with the mechetronic repair kit.
