A4 Atop start

I have just bought a A4 avant sline on a 62 plate. It has stop start but it appears that the system spends more time not working than working.

It only stays off for a very short period of time say 30 seconds at most. But the majority of the time it does not work at all. It appears that it does not work if you have the air con on but this is on by default. If you switch it off you can not even have the fans running. On this basis seems like a pointless system. Anyone else had same issues. Is it normal or does this indicate a fault somewhere. At the moment is see the little symbol for it not being active far more than it switching off. Do i need to take back to the garage or is just the way the system is which unfortunately makes it pointless.

Doesn't sound like things are working as they should be.

It depends on the engine but firstly it has to be warm once the system works. On my 1.8 TFSI it works after the engine hits about 60celcius (about 1/4 mark on the gauge). It does this even with the AC on and heating on. That being said, the more power the car is using, the less likely the engine will stop or stay on.

I think it might be that your battery isn't fully charged / or needs replacing but that's just speculation on my part.

I think on average with everything running the engine stay off for about 1 minute to 2/3 minutes depending on how long I've been driving. Equally, if the cabin is up to temp and the heater / ac doesn't need to do anything I've had it stay off for 4 mins at a level crossing.

I'd say completely normal for this time of year. And exactly the same as my 63 plate model.
The criteria for it to work is a lot harder to meet at this time of year, eg warm engine, warm cabin, and low load on the battery.
Turning heating off will make a difference as you are taking out one of the selection criteria out of the equation.

Once the weather is warmer you should see a huge difference
